Intelligence, Nature vs Nurture

Today in class we had a discussion about intelligence.  Initially, I believed everyone was born with a strength, but I thought intelligence can be nurtured.  After reading Howard Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences I believe that everyone has high intelligence level in something.  Schools only notice children who have a high intelligence level in math, science, or verbal reasoning, so the students who strengths are in something else usually do not do well in school.  I think this is extremely unfair because what happens to these students?  I think something has to be designed so that the students who have a high intelligence level in something other than math, science, or verbal reasoning will have a chance to function in society.

I agree. We as teachers should find the time to develope childrens strengths in learning.

Chris, I totally agree with you. I think there are many kids with other types of intelligence that don’t get recognized in school, and it’s a shame. I feel that I did well in school as a child, but I wasn’t recognized as one of the ‘brightest’ students. But I did have an ‘artistic intelligence’ that was never recognized in the school curriculum. Until reading the article, I always thought of it as a talent and not an intelligence. I feel we need a way to recognize those students who have other intelligences out of the norm.

I agree Chris and I see this happening often with the foster children I work with. They all have individual intelligence’s that usually don’t fit into the schooling mode. So these talents go unrecognized. The are undeveloped and the kids have no confidence in them. This is sad to me and school should have different ways to recognize different talents.
