Last night’s speech
Last night, as a class we attended the Mays Lecture. Marian Wright Edelman was the speaker and I thought the speech was interesting. I can tell she is an advocate for equal opportunities for all people, especially disadvantage children. One of the reasons I entered the UACM Program was to serve students from disadvantage backgrounds. I want to serve students who are considered the ”underdogs” because I believe they need the service the most. I believe attending the lecture was a good experience for me because I have been very stressed lately and questioning the program very much. The lecture help me to refocus on the big picture of making a difference of the lives of students who need it the most. Also the video at the end of the lecture really touched me and gave me the motivation I needed to do my best in the program.

Hey Chris,
I definitely agree. I too have been searching for the motivation I had when I first entered the program, and I too regained my focus after the lecture last night. I think that, as someone stated in one of our classes, we need constant reminders of why we chose to become teachers in high-needs schools. All too often, we are so overwhelmed and stressed from everything that we have going on that we sometimes forget our end goal. Before I started the program, I read a book by Stephen R. Covey entitled “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People,” and one of the habits I remember is “Begin with the end in mind”. When I started the program, I was constantly focused on how all of my hard work would contribute to my end goal of becoming a change agent for students in high-needs schools. So, as I continue through the program I will constantly remind myself of the end result for which I am working.
I agree. This event help me to regain focus.
